Celebrating Leo

“Sometimes the littlest things take up the most room in your heart”

– Winnie the Pooh

My last hours of my working day were brightened by a welcome interruption. Melanie Finn-Dobson called me to ask if I was available to photograph her grandson’s 1st birthday and needless to say, I didn’t require much convincing; even if it was last minute.

I’d Mel several years ago through my previous job as a teacher, when she brought her son to work with us. With both of us being video game and superhero nerds, we hit it off immediately and over the course of a few months, Jacob grew from a shy and awkward young man to a man confident and sure.

Mel never held back in expressing her gratitude for our work with Jacob and through this, we became friends. As time passed, she told me about her daughter Hannah’s new arrival, so when she asked me to photograph his first birthday party a year later, I was more than delighted.
The hall was decked with party paraphernalia and the smell of good food lingered in the air. As more and more family and friends arrived, it was clear that little Leo was very much a loved boy and this was what I sought to capture.

Photographing guests interacting, children playing, food being eaten and little Leo having a ball were priorities but let’s be honest, I’d be doing myself a disservice if I didn’t throw in my trademark low-key lighting booth. People responded positively and I was able to capture friends and family willing to be silly before the camera as well as some special pictures of Hannah, dad Sam and the little star of the show.

Happy Birthday Little One. By the time you’re old enough to read and understand this, your 1st birthday will have long since passed but by the pictures, may you never forget how truly and utterly loved you really are.

Until the next time
